I have come to expect outstanding historical fiction from Ralph Peters and he does not disappoint with this book. This Civil War novel picks up with the ill-fated mine that the North built to break the South in the siege of Petersburg. It details man’s inhumanity to man and the slaughter that followed after the explosion and the crater was formed. It shows that no one is immune to the cruelty that comes upon these men, both North and South in this struggle. It follows numerous generals and enlisted men from both sides as they struggle with their injuries and illnesses that threaten to take them out of the theater of war. It highlights the frustration that is endured as battles fall apart and lives are senselessly wasted because of ill planning and execution.Ralph Peters brings history to life! He does not whitewash the personalities and the brutalities that occur. You feel that you are in the thick of the battle, can hear the booming cannon and muskets and smell all the horrendous odors that fill the air. He follows the war in chronological order, rotating between North and South, generals and enlisted men. All the chapters are identified at the beginning detailing which side of the battle is going to be described which makes for ease in following the story.Again, I highly recommend this book. If you have read the other three in the series, you definitely won’t want to miss this one. If you haven’t read them and are interested in just this period of the war, you can pick this novel up and follow and enjoy without having read the others. I would recommend this for teen and older readers. Mr. Peters minces no words and descriptions and this may be too graphic for younger readers. I am eagerly awaiting the last installment of this sequence of books!

5 starsThis book tells the story of Petersburg from both the Union and Confederate points of view in 1864. All of the major characters are there: Grant, Meade, Lee, Burnside, Hancock, Hill and Beauregard. It gives the reader a short biography of the men, both the actual people and the characters fostered in Peters’ imagination to flesh out the story. It was stiflingly hot and everyone, officers and enlisted men alike, suffered because of it.Sitting in a comfortable chair at home in the present, we get the picture of the horrors of the Civil War. Not only do we get a sense of the harsh terrain and tactics available at the time, but also the feelings and thoughts of those present at the battles on the way to Petersburg from the officers to the enlisted man. For the most part, the men on both side of the war gave it their all and acted bravely even when pushed to their physical and psychological limits.The “colored” troops play a part in this novel as well. The politicians wanted to hold them in abeyance for fear of what the abolitionists would say if any were killed. But the men were anxious to fight and some acquitted themselves quite well.The reader must understand the sheer horror of the war. One panicked man would send several of his cohorts running away from the battle. Men using bayonets and clubbing the opposition to death with their rifles – this was perfectly awful. I know this goes on in war, but Mr. Peters describes it so thoroughly and colorfully that one can’t help but get these pictures in their mind. He describes the terrain surrounding the various battles very well. The reader is there, slogging up and down the craters, eating the dust along with the soldiers, sweating in their filthy and smelly uniforms – what was left of them that it.Each man held to his beliefs, politics and ideology – rightly or wrongly - as they fought for the battle-scarred ground. Mistakes in judgment were made that cost lives.Very well written and plotted, this book takes the reader right into the battle. I have read all of Ralph Peters’ Battle Hymn Cycle series and truly enjoyed them all. I am going to look into his other books now as well.

The Damned of Petersburg is Ralph Peters’ fourth novel in a series that describes through the experiences of participants the progress of the Civil War from the Battle of Gettysburg (Cain at Gettysburg), the Wilderness and Grant’s march southward to Richmond (Hell or Richmond) and the initial battles east of Richmond (Valley of the Shadow).His story now moves to the siege of Petersburg in the summer of 1864 and the inexorable movement of the Union Army west. Peters’ story focuses on the tactical and operational level of the war, as experienced by the actual participants. He reintroduces us to multiple Union and Confederate protagonists. Generals Grant and Lee, opposing Corps and Division Commanders, and two tactical level leaders –Brevet Lieutenant Charles Brown of the 50th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry and COL William C. Oates, CSA, of the 48th Alabama. It is as if Peters had available their diaries or had tape-recorded their actual discussions before, during and after each battle. His griping, realistic account of each battle is only missing the actual eardrum breaking sounds of artillery fire, bullets whizzing by, and men dying and the smells of death and deprivation. Peters’ exceptionally researched and well written stories provide a new context for understanding the Civil War in the eastern theater and, on a large scale, the actual effects of engagement in battle and what its does to the men fighting.
